Background
Eastern Indonesia faces many complex development challenges. The issues of alignment and harmonization are particularly important given the regiona �s immense cultural diversity, its remoteness and the fact that the population is spread over a very large geographical area, making it difficult for development stakeholders, particularly donors to establish a significant presence and maintain the necessary contacts that would allow harmonization of programs and take local conditions into account.
There are many valuable lessons to be learned from local governments, civil society, and donors working together in eastern Indonesia to increase development effectiveness. Facilitating exchange of smart practices, experience, and lessons learned among development stakeholders can support development actors to work more effectively.
The Eastern Indonesia Knowledge Exchange (BaKTI) encourages knowledge-based sustainable development through the exchange of experience, smart practices, information, documents and data in eastern Indonesia.
BaKTIa �s goal is a �improved development in eastern Indonesiaa �, and it aims to support development actors to achieve this broad goal through a focus on four specific objectives:Supporting development actors to collaborate and harmonize development initiativesEncouraging development actors to learn from one another and share knowledge to improve the quality of development programProviding media and building mechanisms so development actors are able to deliver and provide input to the development agendaBaKTIa �s knowledge exchange platforms include a monthly, bilingual newsletter (BaKTINews), online knowledge exchange, SMS broadcast system, website, contact databases, publications, and regular discussions and dialogues on development issues in the region.
BaKTI developed the online knowledge exchange (batukar.info) as a technological tool to bring together users and creators of development knowledge and services. The portal serves as a starting point for users requiring development information and services related to eastern Indonesia. The portal will:mobilize, organize and create new regional development-related content from local and international sources for local and for international users interested in development topic, thus facilitating various partnerships through the Web portal.contain data and information which help the users better understand Eastern Indonesia in the context of development. It aims to help them find information and communities of practice with which to collaborate, and resources and tools to help with their activities.act as a catalyst to facilitate the exchange of information on development projects, opportunities, or best practices in a variety of areas relevant to development of Eastern Indonesia.provide media for supporting communications initiatives being run by Civil Society, Government, and other stakeholder to share concerns and ideas.To better communicate with these audiences and meet BaKTIa �s overall objectives, we are currently looking for a dynamic web manager/editor
Duties and Responsibilities:Managing all aspects of BaKTI website (bakti.org ) and online knowledge exchange (batukar.info) content, which requires conceptualizing and detailed planning of new content.Researching and identifying content areas in need of further development.Establishing a journalistic style for websites, void of jargon and highly technical language.Coordinating closely with the BaKTI team on selecting relevant content from programs and tailoring it for the website and portal.Managing the schedules, writing, and editing functions of the website and portal.Creating a strategy and off-line activities focused on improving online community knowledge exchangeCoordinating with IT Officer on software and system requirements of the websitesWorking with content resources around the region and in any kind of thematic development-related areas, planning and writing new content for these areas;Planning and coordinating other internet efforts as needed that improve relations and positioning of BaKTI.Helping set overall guidelines and standards for website and portal and for contributors in terms of writing - tone, style, voice, use of language, web writing, etc.Regularly tracking and analyzing web traffic to inform the web strategy and future directions and coordinating with Monitoring and Evaluation Officer to ensure evaluation needs are met.Creating a social media strategy and contributing to updating BaKTIa �s social media platforms and mailing listsProviding content for BaKTIa �s SMS broadcast systemOther duties as required by Communications Unit Manager relevant to the positionDeliverablesDaily updates for BaKTI website (bakti.org ) and online knowledge exchange (batukar.info) contentN (weekly log)Troubleshooting and query response for Batukar users (weekly log)5 main stories per month based on content provided from BaKTI core and external programs (including event coverage, program achievements, new resource reviews) to be used for online and print platformsEstablishing relationships with 3 online communities (link exchange, joint events, information exchange)Daily updates to BaKTI social media platforms and mailing listsReporting against BaKTIa �s monitoring and evaluation indicators for web related productsRegular SMS broadcastsPreferred Requirements:Strong knowledge of web development and/or experience producing for the web (extensive working knowledge of Content Management Systems and basic knowledge of web authoring).Proven writing and editing skills in English and Indonesian.Experience in writing and editing for the web.Basic skills in Adobe Photoshop or other image manipulation software.Strong interest in and some understanding of eastern Indonesian development issues, context and dynamics.Ability to work capably under stress and to manage multiple tasks within tight deadlines.Strong diplomatic, interpersonal and teamwork skills; demonstrated client orientation; sensitive to working in a multicultural environment.Experience involved in live website developmentLocation, Duration and Reporting The position is based in Makassar, Indonesia. The assignment will be until 31 December 2013. The opportunity for extension depends on performance. The Web Content Officer will be managed and supervised by the Communications Unit Manager.
